It’s All About the Now

TolleSpeaking to Arianna Huffington on stage at a recent conference, Eckhart Tolle summarized his main spiritual message: enjoy your present moment.

Tolle, author of the best selling book “The Power of Now” seems to never tire of explaining how important the present moment is. “Your entire life only happens in this moment. The present moment is life itself,” reports the Huffington Post. “Yet, people live as if the opposite were true, and treat the present moment as a stepping stone to the next moment — a means to an end.”

How can we live in the present moment?

Tolle suggests stopping periodically throughout our day and just checking in with ourselves, which he dubbed “mini meditations.”

Others have called this practice, “being with the what is.” It’s a moment where we notice our external surroundings: the furnishings of our environment, the quality of the light, the people nearby. It’s also stopping to take note of information coming into our senses, such as any sounds or sensations. Finally, it’s also a moment where we take stock of our internal landscape. Do we feel stressed right now? Is there a knot in our neck? Are we compulsively thinking about some topic?

As Tolle told Huffington, we tend to regard the present moment as an obstacle to get to the next moment, which we falsely believe will bring the fulfillment we are looking for. But, if we miss the present moment, we miss our life.
